Last Thursday the move from my home in Lower Hillsdale Heights was accomplished–something I’d been building toward since late last August when I realized it was time to sell and picked up the phone.
Although it has been arduous, and seemingly endless, things actually moved quickly. There was the cleaning things out for staging, cleaning things out for a garage sale, and then just plain old packing up and cleaning things out to move. I relocated to temporary digs in Lake Oswego the first of October. The house went on the market September 22 and by September 27 we had a buyer. 
But it took until last Thursday for the whole thing to be real. And now it is.
I read Louise Penny’s newsletter on November 1. She moved last Thursday too, leaving a place she really loved for a condo. It was comforting somehow to know we were both in the same boat–leaving something familiar that we’d grown to love for the unknown. But change happens. My instinct is to resist it, but while even the good changes are difficult, they are what keep us growing and learning. Change forces us into the present.
Looking back, I am not certain how it all got done. Like Louise, I launched a new book during the chaos. I also participated in two major book events (one out of town), went on two short road trips, showed up for work at both of my jobs (except for last week), and attended and reviewed several plays. I did not do this alone. Of the many people who helped along the way, I particularly want to thank Lynn Greenwood, Rebecca Macy, and my sister Janet Nedry. They always knew when to show up and what to do when I didn’t!
Now the chaos surfing is done. Physically things should be much easier. After two months of touch-and-go, I am turning attention back to the much-neglected business of promoting THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE. Here’s what’s happening. During November 2015, I am selling books for breast cancer research (having completely missed October). I will donate 10% of all gross sales–on line, on the website, or in person–to The Cure. Readers closer to this subject than I: please suggest which foundation would be the best choice for this donation. And please pass along the message. 
Two book signings are scheduled for November. I’ll be reading, answering questions, and signing books on Saturday, November 14, 3-5 p.m. at Woodstock Wine & Deli, 4030 SE Woodstock Blvd. Portland 97202. This is a wonderful gathering place. Sip some wine, pick up some snacks, or just stop in and say hi.
And on Thanksgiving weekend I will be at the Chehalem Tasting Room, 100 S. Center, Newberg 97132 on Saturday, November 28 from noon until 5 p.m. The Thanksgiving in Wine Country has been a part of my life since the early 1980s, and a fine tradition it is!
